NOTHING is worse than having vour car break down —
except having it break down in the wee North Shore win-
ter.

Preventative maintenance is always a good idea, but
especialiy before the weather hits. Here are hints from
Sam Amlani, general manager of Lower Mainland Minit-
tunes.

1. Change your antifreeze if it hasn’t been changed in
two years or more, It dacs break down after a while and
you can get rust in your cooling system.

2. Have your belts and hoses checked. If the hoses are
soft, or if it’s has been more than four years since they've
been changed, they may need replacing.

3. Make sure you have the right tires: if you mainly drive
around on city roads you need all-season tires; in the
mountains, you need snow tires. If you drive a luxury or
sports car, says Amlani, you need four snow tires, not just
two.

4. Get your brakes checked. If there is more wear on one
side, you could find yourself in a skid if a brake locks in
slippery weather. A winter driving tip from Amilani: If
you have ABS brakes never pump them to stop.

“That causes a lot of accidents. It’s a computer brak-
ing system and when you pump the brakes you are ‘telling
the computer ‘Stop car, don*t stop car, stop car.”

5. Get an oil change and tune- up before the winter starts.
6. Have your cooling system pressure tested to make sure
the water pump and radiator is OK.

7. Have your battery terminals cleaned —- you'll find it
hard to start when it’s cold.

8. Check your owner’s manual to see if your timing belt
needs replacement, usually between 80,000 to 100,000
kilometres. If you don’t replace the timing belt, your
valves may need replacing — an expensive prospect.
