Nevertheless, 1 felt that the age thing alone would beat him at the ballot box, as it will almost certainly beat Bob Dole, 10 years his junior. But as the days passed, a surprising protege, Coun, Pat Boname, who is definitely running for the top post. He believed the other mooted contender — Coun. Andy Danyliit — would back off rather than give up his safe council seat. And even if he fails, what a spectacular way to bow out. So when Derrick pulled back last week — announcing that, for family reasons, he'd forget about running for mayor and stand for council instead — I felt genuine disappointment.
