THE beat of Mickey Hart
comes closest to the
North Shere this Friday
as the Further Festival
gathers in George,
Washington at the out-
door Gorge amphitheatre.

Hart, a contributor to the
Olympic Games opening cer-
emonies’ musical soundtrack,
will be among a number of
performers taking part in the
seven-hour concert. — the
post-Jerry Gurcia answer to
satiating Grateful Dead fan's
limitless hunger for shows.

Playing in the Band and The
Greatest’ Story Ever Told
evolved from Hart rhychnis.

Since Garcia's death on
Aug. 9 of last year, members
of the Dead have nat slowed
down with their musical pur-
suits. While Weir delved
deeper into Ratdog. Hart
recorded Afystery Box, his
first solo project to include
singing as well as world-class
drumnning.

“I wanted to
hear drums and
beautiful voic-
es — the most
sacred = of
instruments —
together,” Hart
said of adding
words to his
pulsing com-
postitions. “To
create a music
that was like chanting, but
with that strong driving
rhythms... the deep grooves...
the body.”

Teamed with long-time
Garcia song-writing partner
Robert.Hunter, Hart recorded
10 tracks unlike anv on his
previous solo work. Indeed, 2
few of the songs — dare I
say — could find air-time on
Vancouver rock-and-roll
radio stations...

In addition to the female
voices of British a capella
group the Mint Julips, Hart

lends his own voice to sever-
al of the tracks, including The
Sandman (wiWeir on lead
guitar), and the evocative
Down The Road, &
Hunteresque tribute to fallen
heroes Joe Hill. Jack
Kennedy, John Lennon and
Jerry Garcia (Hornsby adds a
wicked accordion riff).

For Hart. writing with
Hunter was a highlight of the

recording ses-
sion. :
“Hunter is the
man,” Hart
gushed. “He
came into the
studio with us,
like he did on
some of the best
Grateful Dead
albuins, and he
listened to the
‘way the words
fit the grooves, and edited as
we went along.”

And for Hunter, writing
for Mystery Box created new
challenges. And inspirations.

“I was very conscious that
i wasn't writing for Jerry's
voice,” Hunter said. “I sort of
switched gears, and thought
of things that would suit
Mickey’s personality.”
