By Bavid Korsch Tight Lines First of all, you need to use downriggers if you want to be suc- cessful. As I explain to all my char- ter customers, you must use flashers to create the illusion of a school of sockeye following your boat. - On each downrigger, use one or more false flashers (a flasher on five- to 10-feet of line, and no lure behind it) in addition to the flashers on your lines. Clip them on to your downrigger cable below your lines. If you use a 10-foot false tlasher- line, clip your first line 10 feet above your false flasher, then clip your next Ene 15- to 20-feet above your first line. A third line could then be clipped {5- to 20-feet further up your cable. This method of running your lines will pluce six or more flashers in a narrow depth range (approxi- mately 50 feet). As you troll through or near schools of sockeye, some will begin to follow your “school” and bite your lines. When one does bite, it is important to keep trolling while you play and land your first fish because the sockeye you have collected behind your flashers will still be fol- lowing and hitting. By continuing to troll you may be able to hook up two, three, or even more ut once. Also, leader length is not as important as you may have been led to believe. { use a variety of lengths from about 22 feet to 36 feet. A general rule is: light leaders are shorter than heavier leaders. 1 prefer 40 Ib. test, and use up to 60 Ib, at times. This heavy leader imparts more action on your hootchie than a [stainiess Steel } Grab Ralls Chemical Feeder Top-Mount Filter light leader. Trolling speed also comes into play at this point. The faster you troll, the longer the leader should be. With all of the cross currents, and strong Udes off the Fraser River mouth, you will find it hard to keep your lure speed constant as you change directions. This is the reason for the variety of leader lengths. If aii your leaders are the same length, then the lures may only be acting properly in one direction at a particular t.p.m, setting, and at ail other times they may be ineffective. For this very reason, it is impor- tant to vary your trolling speed. Often you may have fish following, and as you change direction or speed you get two or three to hit. Over the past couple of weeks, the most productive area has been located between the QA marker and Tona Island (35 to 100 feet).
