Local club gets on track

‘Norwesters one of 12 teams in North American league

NORWESTERS TRACK and Field
Club of the North Shore is delighted
to be chosen as one of the 12 clubs
in Canada to support a National
Track League team.

This is a major step forward for
the club which has, in the past 10
years, grown to be one of the largest
clubs in B.C.

The National Track League
(NTL) is the brain child of Dr. Doug
Clement (Canadian National Team
doctor and National Team distance
coach) and a group of national team
athletes. The purpose of this league
is to introduce track and field to the
general public as entertainment and
to structure competitions as enter-
tainment, :

It is an attempt to raise the profile
of the sport and to encourage elite
athletes. The League Structure
allows for six teams in the east
(Monireal, Windsor, Etobicoke.
Ottawa, Toronto and Phoenix) and
six teams in the western (Seattle,

Fraser Valley, Victoria and
Richmond).

Each division will compete in a
series of meets which culminate in
the eastern and western division
championships. The schedule runs
from late May to early August when
the West takes on the East at
Abbotsford.

The North Shore team.is a team

of future senior athletes and it has
the potential to be a powerhouse
within a few years.

The teams shall be scored on a
scale which equates performances in
sprints and hurdles, distance, jumps
and throws.

Individual and team scores will
be kept. Awards will be given for
top team, top male and female ath-
lete and top male and female rookie.
