HOME & GARDEN Good news in snore wars “LAUGH AND the world laughs with you, snore and you sleep alone,’’ said author Anthony Burgess. Any bed partner who’s moved into the guest room (or just wanted to) would heartily agree. By far, the real sufferers of this affliction are not the snorers but the ‘‘snorees’’ -- the people who share their bedrooms. Since male shorers outnumber females nine to one, these are usually women. It’s estimated that over 40 mil- lion North Americans snore at feast occasionally, and 60% of all men between 40 and 64 snore heavily. At its worst, snoring can reach 80 to 90 decibels, as loud as a dog’s bark or the din of a jackhammer. I?’s no wonder that snoring turns roommates into enemies and often destroys otherwise happy relationships. The good news is that women now have more weapons in the snore wars arsenal than just a good set of earplugs. “Women need no longer take it lying down,” says ear, nose and throat specialist Derek S. Lipman, M.D., who recently wrote the book How to Stop Your Husband from Snoring. “Snoring has graduated from being regarded as a_ hopeless nightly nuisance to the level of a legitimate medical problem — as respectable a symptom as back pain or headache,"’ he explains. Snoring may be caused by poor muscle tone and/or increased bulk in the tissues of the throat, nasal obstruction, anatomical defor- mities in the airway (such as a broken or crooked nose}, and obesity. Drugs, smoking and extreme fa- tigue also can aggravate the prob- lem. Most physicians will treat pa- tients on a progressive scale, beginning with simple changes in sleep habits and lifestyle and mov- ing into more complex modes of treaiment if those fail, says Lip- man. To begin with, he recommends a well-ventilated room, a suppor- tive mattress and a low pillow to keep the snorer’s neck straight and reduce airway obstruction. Since people are most likely to snore on their backs, it’s impor- tant to avoid that position — perhaps by sewing a pocket with a golf or tennis ball into the back of the snorer’s pyjama top. If a snorer is overweight, weight loss —- accomplished by both diet and exercise —~ often helps reduce or ever: eliminate snoring. The young plants grow slowly so they are best transplanted into small, two-inch containers such as peat pots or bedding plant trays after three to four weeks. Keep them in a sunny window and maintain temperatures of 70°F during the day and 60°F at night. You can expect more on these new varieties in the coming weeks ahead. On a lighter note, Lipman adds that he once came across a news- paper ad from the early 1900s which enticed readers to send money for ‘‘a simple snoring remedy that all physicians will unqualifiedly endorse involving no medicine, no mechanical con- trivances.”" The ‘‘cure’’ was this advice: Don’t go to sleep.
