stopped short of saying
women should be admitted
to the priesthood.

week of deliberations of the
World Synod of Bishops.
“There is no reputable
theologian today who would
deny that the equality of
man and woman is con-
stituted by God and con-
firmed by Christian
teaching,” the U.S. bishops’

States, were making great
strides in realizing their
God-given rights mainly
because of the spread of
technology, increased ur-

But while the bishops
noted that equality of the
sexes has been a frequent
theme in church teachings,
they said the scope of the
current month-long synod is
the Christian family and its
role in modern society.
