16 - Sunday, May 5, 1991 - North Shore News FASHION Sclerotherapy treats ‘spider veins’ MANY WOMEN look forward to spring —- the time of year when warm weather fashions hit the racks, and sunny days allow women to wear shorts, bathing suits, and no nylons. But others dread this season year after year because they are too uncomfortable or embarrassed to wear revealing and cooler clothing. Instead they resort to covering up so that no wee will know their secret: they have unsightly red marks on their legs known as spider veins. According to the B.C. Medical Association section of der- matology, this condition causes some women to be self-conscious and may also be painful and un- comfortable. Spider veins, or sunburst or starburst vessels, can form any- where on the leg, from the top of the thigh to the ankle. As spider veins are not necessary to the cir- culatory system, these small pur- ple or red veins do not pose a ma- jor health problem, but the discomfort and emotional scarring of consistently trying to cover them up, compels many suffers to seek out treatment. The gocd news is that simple treatment called sclerotherapy is available. Used since the 1930s to remove these unwanted red veins, the procedure is performed by a qualified dermatologist, who in- jects a small amount of saline solution directly into the spider veins using a tiny needle. These injections irritate the blood vessel linings, causing them to swell, stick together and clot the blood. Within a matter of weeks, the vessels turn into scar tissue and begin to fade, eventually becom- ing barely visible or invisible. One patient called Mary (not her real name), a 46-year-old self-employed image consultant, sought out treatment on the rec- ommendation of her family doc- tor. “I’ve had phenomenal success with the treatments that I’ve had over the past three years. I can remember as a young girl always being self-conscious of these red areas on the upper areas of my thighs. When I was as young as 18 years old, 1 used to buy heavy cover make-up and wore clothing to conceal my legs. But I never thought anything could be done. My doctor recommended that | consult with a dermatologist about the other red areas on my legs. “At the beginning, 1 wondered if it all would be worthwhile, but now I’m giad I persevered, I’m so happy with the improvement.’’ Complete clearing is seldomly attained, but a 50 to 80% im- provement is usually seen. Some spider veins require more than one injection and there may be some recurrence. Even after treatment, new veins can appear. Not everyone is a candidate for the procedure. Sclerotherapy is not used during pregnancy. For those who can safely undergo treatment, a test area will be done first. After a six-week period, the dermatologist will assessthe effects of treatment. If the test area shows improvement, treatments can begin every six weeks. Aftereffects may include some discomfort. At the injection site there is a possibility of some minor burning or stinging lasting for two or three hours and swell- ing that may persist for up to one or two days. The treated area can appear flushed and tiny blisters may develop, caused by small amounts of the solution seeping into the surrounding skin areas. These blisters usually heal rapidly. Some patients experience musele cramps, or small amounts ol bruising. These effects and others that may occur should be explain- ed by the doctor at an initial con- sultation and monitored carefully. Following treatments, patients are able to walk about normally and resume regular activities right away. {t's not known why some peo- ple have spider veins and others do not. Heredity is one factor and lifestyle may also contribute to the tormation of these veins. Blows or falls can precipitate their devel- opment and standing or sitting for Most names are chosen because the parents like the sound of the name, not realizing that it creates cne's degree of intelligence, personality, desires, and environment.
