HE DRAGON will be roused at False Creek this coming weekend to celebrate the third annual Dragon Boat Festival. Archie Graham ART REVIEW Symbolizing contral over the water, this venerated Chinese mythological water-serpent will bring with it not just the ancient Chinese boat races inveiving up to 60 teams in 45-foot vessels, but a hodge-podge of other multicultural events. West Vancouver's Rosemary di Bernardo, the festival’s executive coordinator, speaks excitedly of building up “our cultural inven- iory,”” eventuaily working up tea whole ‘week's worth of jollitica- tions!” As itis, the three-day stint at the Plaza of Nations is choc-a-blac with entertainment ranging fram concerts by the Vancouver Sym- phony to strolling musicians, larger-than-life puppets, an 18- Projector, multi-image slide- presentation called The Heart of the Dragon, and the Latin- American dance music of Sal Fer- reras. If this is not enough for you there will also be a host of art ex- hibitions representing Pacific Rim cultures. This will include the Dragon Boat Festival Legacy Col- lection which consists of commis- sioned works like this year’s Dragon Chalice by Kinichi Shigeno and last year’s ceremanial Steering Paddle by North Shore artist Bill Koochin. Pacific Rim artisans will be on hand to conduct workshops and periorm demonstrations. Masako Kato will be working with siik, cotton, and synthetic fabrics to make Japanese Azuma and Kimekomi dolis while Michiko Miyazaki will use dyed rice-paper to product handmade paper art works known as Chigiri-e. David So will dlustrate Penjing, the ancient Chinese art of miniature gardens, and Maori weaver Dawn Nathan will repre- sent the native culture of New Zealand by demonstrating the loom-less, Tinger-weaving art of Taniko. Executive members of the new B.C.
