MAILBOX Local water ‘awful’ Open letter to North Vancouver District Council: If you would like to ensure your re-election in three years’ time, just follow this simple formula: give us back our water. After having lived in the same house for over 30 years it’s plain we have seen torrential rains, am- ple snowfalls and anything else the weather can throw at us. Yet, dur- ing all those years, our water quality remained constant. Right up until Expo 86. At that point, the GVRD poured so much chlorine into it we can still taste it, When the tap isn’t oozing a brownish guk and the water seems normal enough, one whiff is enough to send you reeling. Meanwhile, you keep charging us more and more for an inferior commodity. In 1987 our annual water bill was $71.50 after dis- count. This year it’s $132.55. That's a hike of 85 per cent over five years. Come now, at least Jesse James used a gun. Jerry Szach North Vancouver East side road, please Dear Editor: My thanks to Mr. Roelants (North Shore News Dec. 28, 1990) for pointing out that a second highway to Squamish wouldn’t make any sense if it were to be built up the west side of Indian Arm. Ite must go up the east side; namely from Coquitlam north through Belcarra and Buntzen to Wigwam Inn and over the Mam- quam Pass to Squamish. I have talked and written a lot on this subject in recent months. I have talked and written east side, not west side. The only reference I can find to west side appeared in the Vancouver Sun. I apologize for that. Hon. Jack Davis, MLA North Vancouver-Seymour Buildings waste energy Dear Editor: I constantly do my best to be power conscious al) the time, but become so disillusioned when I see Vancouver by night. Sure it is an attractive sight, but that is 2 luxury we can no longer afford. Why does every office on every floor need to be fit for 24 hours? If they halved their con- sumption it would make a large difference, probably more than all the small consumers can save by putting out house lights. Could not B.C. Hydro set a power usage limit depending on floor area? There must be a way to prevent this terrible waste of energy. Shirley Stone West Vancouver NVD can cut letter costs Dear Editor: Every year we proudly pay our dues to the District of North Van- couver for water service, and our pets’ and licence fee. . For the last year we have been receiving three invoices for water and two dogs, ali addressed to me on the same day in three letters at a cost of $1.09. While the district debates over a surcharge of $.50 per replacement tag fee for the dogs, they could instead take a walk to the mailroom and see how much could be saved on postage and labor by sending only one letter per household at a cost of $.36 per letter.
