Manufacturers have responded with new products that provide UV protection. But, consumer misconceptions abound. Dr. Jack Weber, director of research and devel- opment at a major eyewear manufacturer, has iden- tified three of the most commonly held beliefs related to sunglass selection. Weber clarifies the factors involved in’ medically correct eye protection by separating fact from fic- tion. He also distinguishes eye protection from the issue of comfort and style: True or false? 1. The darker the sunglass lenses, the more they will protect’ your eyes. This statement is incorrect. The primary purpose for choosing a lighter or darker sunglass lens is for eye comfort. When protection is the issue, one must discuss degrees of ultraviolet fight absorption, not darkness. or lightness of sunglass lenses. It’s entirely possible, for example, to have a pair of sunglasses that boasts a very high level of UV protection even though the lens may be very light. UV inhibitors protect your eyes; the lightness or darkness of sunglass lenses do not. 2. If you can see your eyes, your sunglasses are not dark enough. This statement is false. {¢ is most im- portant to put this particular myth out to pasture — — 2. i a . eee - - +2951 W. Broadway + Oakridge Centre «Lougheed Mall ¢ Eaton Centre Metrotown immediately, Unless dark-lens sunglasses have UV protection, Urey are downright dangerous. A person may mistakenly buy sunglasses with very dark lenses but without any UV protection, believing that dark leases alone provide sufficient: protection. They don't! In fact, according to Weber, ‘‘Coprotected dark lenses are a double disaster. Dark lenses send a message to the pupil of the eye to admit more light; in response, the pupil enlarges to do just that! Now noc only is the unfiltered light absorbed by the eye, in the long run, it could well be a source of injury. 3. Whether vour eves are lieht or dark, the amount of protection they need is the same. This is another variation of the protection vs. comfort distinction. For protection, sunglasses must hive UV inhibitors, whether your eyes are light or dark. For comfort, light cyes are going to feel better in darker lenses. Dark eyes will do fine in medium to fight fenses. Dark eyes have more pigment in them, which helps to absorb brightness. Light eyes have less pigment and are more sensitive to light. Thus, lightness or darkness of your natural eye color does affect your choice of fighter or darker - sunglass lenses. The protection rule is to look for broad spectrum, UVA and UVB protective sunglasses. Finally, sunglasses that screen UVA and UVB rays provide the best-known health protection for eyes. And since these rays are present on sunny and. cloudy days, ali year round, Weber suggests wearing sunglasses whenever you're out of doors.
