Attempted murder hearing set A NORTH Vancouver man will appear for a preliminary hearing Nov. 7 in North Vancouver provincial court to face a variety of charges in connection with an April 2 house fire. James Reginald Watson, 27, is charged with the attempted murder of Liam Michael Schaeffer and setting fire to a house located at 543 East 3rd St. in North Vancouver. The six people living in the house cscaped but the house was gutted. Watson is also charged with assault causing bodily harm after he allegedly attacked Schaeffer with a chair leg that had five bolts and nuts attached to the end. NV man jailed for UIC fraud A 27-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was sentenced to a 75- day jail term after appearing in North Vancouver provincial court or 21 counts of making false claims for unemployment insurance benefits. David Campbeil pleaded guilty July 3 him. The charges stem from claims Campbell made from March 27, 1988 to Dee. 31, 1988, stating that he did not work while he was collecting benefits. Appearing before Judge R.D. Grandison, Campbell was ordered to serve his sentence at home wearing an electronic monitoring device. Vian faces weapons charge TARAS FILONOV will be facing two counts of possession of an unregistered restricted weapon on Noy. 16 following completion of a show-cause hearing in West Vancouver provincial court. The 23-year-old former West Vancouver resident is the brother of Russians gang member Sergei Filonov, who was shot to death in May outside the Trev Deeley Harley Davidson dealership in Vancouver. Filinov, now a Burnaby resident, is charged with possession of a 9-millimetre Uzi submachine gun and a 22 semi-automatic hand- gun in connection with a Sept. 8, 1989 incident in West Van- couver. , The provincial court has not yet decided on whether Filonov’s text appearance will be for a preliminary hearing or for a trial. Sports fisherman fined $3,000 A BURNABY SPORTS fisherman was fined $3,000 recently in West Vancouver provincial court after he was convicted of various B.C. Sport Fishing Regulations violations. Collin McKea, 76, was found guilty of fishing with a weight greater than one kilogram and also of fishing with a line designed to catch more than one fish at a time.
