CANADA’S MINISTER of
Employment and Immigration
Barbara McDougall recently an-
nounced that the Howe Sound
Community Futures Committee
will receive $395,736 over the next
year to establish a Business
Development Centre.

The committee will also receive
$185,040 over the next year to im-
plement the Self-Employment In-
centive option of Community
Futures, a part of the Canadian
Jobs Strategy’.

“The Business Development
Centre option will help stimulate
the private sector to create perma-
nent, long-term employment
through business advice and in-
vestment funds,'’? McDougall said.

“The Self-Employment Incen-
tive option allows unempicyed
workers to test new business
ideas,” she said. ‘‘Grants in the
form of allowances in lieu of
unemployment insurance or social
assistance benefits can be provided
for up to one year so that they can
establish new businesses,’’

selected for Community Futures
support in January 1987, and in-
cludes Squamish, Whistler,
Pemberton, Britannia Beach,
Pemberton Meadows, Birken,
d’Arcy and the Mount Currie,
Squamish and Anderson Lake In-
dian Bands in the Capilano-Howe
Sound riding.

The committee, officially called
Sea to Sky Economic Development
Ccmmission, is chaired by Dr.
Laverne Kindree and chose the
Business Development Centre and
Self-Employment Incentive options
as the best suited to this communi-
ty’s needs,

Community Futures is geared to
helping workers in communities
that have serious economic pro-
blems but show potential for
growth.
