THE ONGOING story in Hong Kong is how easy it is to get
to Canada and how Hong Kong’s 6,000,000 inhabitants
should up-sticks by 1997, when the commies take over.

Not that they'll all make it, of
course, but when we were there the
word was out that Canada is a
much easier touch than the U.S.
and should therefore be the target
of people’s endeavors.

Headlines in the English-
language newspapers tell the story:
“Vancouver draws emigrants to
home away from home.’ ‘‘A fam-
ily weighs pros and cons of big
shift.”* ‘Advice for immigrants to
Canada.” ‘‘Former television stars

No denying that Hong Kong is
an astounding place, of course.
The island itself is literally a forest
of highrises, and they are still
scrambling to put them up,
whether or not the commies are

The other theory is that nothing
much will happen when China
takes over. But I don’t believe
that. When the Union Jack comes
down and the Hammer and Sickle

dominated by the Reds?

comes in. Hong Kong is such an
economic powerhouse, it is said,
and contains such profitable pro-
spects, that Beijing will simply not
dare to interfere.

There are other experiences to be

The road is a two-lane highway
cut into the hills, and you brush
rock and trees on the one side and
precipices on the other while the
bus goes up and down and round
corners like a gone-mad swit-
chback ride. Whit2 knuckles ahoy,
and for the full thrill sit in the
front seats on the top deck. You
will pray that the brakes don’t fail
and that the driver doesn’t get a
heart attack.

As for food, you pay your
money and take your choice. You
can spend U § § 250 for a meal for
four in a top-class hotel, or $30 in
a good class Chinese restaurant.

Hong Kong doesn’t lack Chinese
restaurants, of course. What
theyll do when the commies come
