The B.C. Federation of Labor has ‘‘totally rejected”’ to proposed new amend- ments but has ruled out a general strike as a means of protesting the changes. Art Kube, president of the B.C. Fed, said this week that the umion umbrella group will have a ‘‘measured”’ response to the amendments following a meeting on May 16. The response of the B.C Fed and other labor groups 1s far from what might have been expected considering the extent of the proposed changes and the fiery reac- tion labor leaders have had to such recent government moves as the legislated end to the pulp mill lock-out and the conflict over the Expo "86 site. The amendments ban union members from. strik- ing over political issues, change the rules to make it easier for a umonized com- pany to decertify, remove the application of automatic cerufication at non-umon companies during union Organizing attempts and gives the government the right to designate projects special economic develop- ment projects which would allow non-umion and union workers to. share fron sites CONS UPUC- B.C. municipalities facing tax THt PROVINCIAL Manistry of Muniipal At fairs reports that 39 of the province's 142 municipalities are Carrying tax arrears that ate greater than 10 per cent of their total tax base “The number will bc higher thes year.” predicts muntoimpal atfains ain sestigatoe John McDonald Munitipalities that are capentencing ditliculties in AMBLESIOE ALS.
