B17 - Sunday, May 6, 1984 - North Shore News EE entertainm cnt A U.B.C. art historian returns to present the birth of modern art on May 12 at Carson Graham Secondary School when Dennis Sex- smith returns to North Shore Continuing Education’s Night School in a_ Day. French Impressionism, the movement which established landscape painting as the foremost gentre in art, will be presented in slides and lecture format. Sexsmith will draw upon his extensive knowledge of the old French provinces and-of Paris, where-the new Museum of the Nineteenth Century is due to open short- ly: the ‘Musee d’Orsay’ (Or- say Museum), housed in a magnificently converted glass and steel railway station in the 1890’s. Impressionist painting celebrated the era of the railway and the new life- Styles in this era of rapid ur- French Impressionism taught here ban development. The Night School in a Day presentation takes place on Saturday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Carson Graham Secondary. The fee of $25 includes lunch. More information may be obtained at 985-8741. North Shore folk club begins NORTH SHORE Folk Club is a brand new organization formed by British folk singers, Eric and Betty ARm- strong. The new club will Operate out Of Presentation House. It will debut with two CATS was performed by intermediate students at Ridgeview School Wednesday and Thursday even informal evenings of song, May 7 and May 21 beginning at 8 p.m. at Presentation House. A wide range of folk music from. traditional ballads to rousing chorus songs will be performed. The club aims to develop a foik performance series at Presentation House that will Provide exposure for artists and attract the support of North Shore audiences. They intend to begin with a series based on the poems of T.S. Eliot with music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The National Arts Centre presents THURS.
