OUTDOOR BURNING in
West Van will only be allow-
ed on the weekends in April
this year.

Despite a recommendation
from the Fire Chief and the
District Director of Opera-
tions in favor, Council has
decided not to allow burning
on any day in April.

The recommendation from
the Chief and the Operations
Director came, mainly, to
relieve the concentration of
outdoor burning from Satur-
days and Sundays in April.

Council’s decision, which
asks the GVRD to monitor
air quality before, during,
and after the burning period,
is within the recommenda-
tions made to Council by Dr.
W. McBean, Medical Officer
of Health with the Nort

In discussing the issue,
Alderman Diana Hutchinson
started off by saying, ‘‘!
think it’s ridiculous we’re
dealing with this now, or at
anytime, in light of the fact
we’re in the process of pass-
ing a bylaw that restricts
smoking.’’ (See separate

was the only member of
council in favor of opening
up the entire month to out-
door burning.

‘i'd hke it to be approved,
get the (air quality) results in,
see what they say, and then
maybe we'll eventually get
what we all want and that’s
to ban outdoor burning
altogether, I don’t know,’’ he
argued. .
