C6 - Sanday, December 25, 1983 - North Shore News Ge travel Presents that can't be wrapped WITH THE UNCERTAINTY about = schoo! closures a few weeks ago, I cancelled our plans to spend Christmas in Hawaii and started baking fruitcakes. I haven’t gone so far as to start singing, **There’s No Place Like Home For the Holidays’’ but all in all it’s not so bad. Mind you, we have the on- ly Christmas tree I’ve seen where the ornaments end about a yard from the floor. Even so, there’s usually one or two glass balls lying around on the floor after B.J. and Emily have had a soccer game. | wouldn’t be surprised if the inventor of the game had watched two cats dnbbling the Christmas ornaments. We also have the only pile of presents under a tree, firmly tucked-up in old sheets. Beats having to re- wrap every morning. Chnstmas nbbon is much more fun than a ball of wool — and you can really catch people’s attention when you start carting off the bows. Of course there are a few presents | can’t wrap: - To the travel agent who routed my mother home from Maw with three over- might stop-overs (Honest! First in Waikiki, second in Los Angeles and third in Calgary.) A new job. Anywhere, so long as it isn’t connected with the travel industry . - To the airline clerk who seated me next to a couple with two toddlers, a chance to spend his next long flight cozied-up with the same group. And a bag of black hconice. - To the A Canada clerk at Frankfurt Airport who spent half an hour taping together my broken suitcase so it could be checked, my deepest appreciation. - To the London cab drivers who have always been helpful and full of the best ups, plenty of big tippers with small suitcases. - To the person who im- NicKenzie King CANADA’S 10TH prime minister, William Lyon MacKenzie King, spent much of his boyhood in a rambling mid-Victonan home in Kit- chener, Ontano. Without this genius I'd probably have one arm remarkably longer than the other. - To the dealers in Reno and Las Vegas who have given me yards of stones and information for this column, may their best hands come when they’re sitting on the other side of the table. - To the Egyptian who *‘liberated’” my jacket from the bus, may you wear it with both hands. I’ve been told that a career of theft in that part of the world = can eliminate your need for nail clippers. - To the water taxi Operator in Venice who rip- ped us off for about $20, a swimming lesson. Right about the same spot that Katherine Hepburn made such a splash in ‘‘Summertime.’’ - To the car rental firm we last used in Maui, ten cans of cockroach spray. And, to the employee who told me, ‘“*“Cockroaches? Impossi- ble!’’, then, thinking he’s switched the call to another line, yelled, ‘‘Hey, Joe! Got another cockroach problem. Some dame on line one.’’ - roaches. In his underwear drawer. To all airlines, an unhmited supply of smoke detectors to be placed in all washrooms.
