A8 - Wednesday, May 19, 1982 - North Shore News ES mailbox Dear Editor: Our local MLA Jack Davis writes “Let's face facts” regarding the hospital crisis in B.C. (North Shore News, \ May 9) but unfortunately his so-called “facts” are less than accurate. Davis tries to shock us by reporting that a third of the provincial budget is spent on health care, but there has been very little difference in that amount of sharing for the past 20 years — 1960 budget showed 29 per cent for health, “in 1967 it was 33.9 per cent. Last year it was 28.7 per cent and for this year 30 per cent. That's what provincial responsibilities are mainly concerned with, health, education and social services. Perhaps our MLA _ has forgotten that it was in 1954 hospital insurance was ended and sales tax was increased from three per cent to five per cent to help finance hospital care. That extra two per cent yields about $400 million dollars this year — 58 per cent over last year, yet the provincial government ts increasing its grants to hsopitals by only 7.69 per cent (not 12 per cent, Mr. Davis). As for the average 20 per cent pay increase our MLA speaks of, hospital workers are in the middle of negotiations (and there are grave doubts on both sides of the negotiating table as to what the rules of the game are with Premier Bennett getting everyone confused). Apart from that, many hospitals did not include any wage increase in their provisional budgets. As Mr. Penwarden, executive director of Prince George Hospital stated in the Vancouver Sun, May 5, that hospital, which laid off 30 workers last year, did not Cabin owners denied use of their OPEN LETTER TO GVRD PARKS COMMITTEE The Holtyburn Hill (DL 1123) Property Owners Association represents all but four of the parcel owners in DL 1123. Despite this fact, the District of West Van- couver disdains to inform us on matters affecting our membership. Through the local paper we understand Simple method for Dear Editor: What a very strange letter from Wendy Salo, Canadian Oxy employee (Stop Harass- ing Hooker, N.S. News, May 12). There is yet another accident involving toxic chemicals at Hooker's. Two the District is proposing a joint study with you of the use of Hollyburn Hili. Insofar as the GVRD 1s concerned, we wish to point out that the ORP presently and reasonably permits the recreational cottages (up to 50 without community water supply within an area of 1.5km) allowed with Limited Use terrain. Insofar as the Ministry of Municipal Affairs is con- cerned, we have by petition February 10, 1982 asked the Ministry to investigate the fact that DL 1123 property owners are being denied use of their parcels (unless they happen to be so wealthy as to be able to buy and amalgamate three of the existing acre parcels). Isofar as the Dastnct of West Vancouver is con- cerned, they own the vast getting Hooker off the hook workers at a nearby industry are overcome by fumes. Contrary to the law, Hooker does not report the incident to the Fire Dep't at once. The Fire Chief insists Hooker comply with the law. The N.S. News reports the incident. Ms. Salo writes she’s tired of Hooker being harassed! Perhaps if they just stop- ped having spills ...? Sheila Gordon, Chemical Hazards Alert Committee CyseTAAlG puts a great deal tae bapen diyhy into a small car. Wages are not closing beds include any wage increase this year in their proposed budget, but received ap- proval for 9.7 per cent less than they had hoped for, resulting in another 65 jobs lost and the closure of 80 beds. So let's not hear any more nonsense abot blaming wages for shortage of dollars. Unemployed citizens cost us money and add to the recession. Why doesn't Victoria tell it like it is — “free enterprise” can't guarantee anyone a thing except uncertainty. Heather Keeley North Vancouver land bulk of the Limited Use terrain at the DL 1123 and above level — and they can declare their property park tomorrow if they so wish. Although the District of West Vancouver appears to tre our membership with contempt, we are forwarding a copy of this letter to the District.
