‘Eggertson photo) VAN’S NORTH Harbour City crew showed why they've gone undefeated in Metro League §stan- dings thus far this Season, as they turned back ‘tthe West Van Rockets 5-2 in an entertaining wide-open encounter Sunday at West Van Arena. In the first two periods, North Van skaters outhustied, outplayed, and outscored the Rockets by a 4-1 margin. And where they left off in the third period, Harbour City netminder Mike Kling frustrated the Rockets’ comeback effort with some brilliant work, repeatedly robbing the home team shooters of what ap- peared to be certain goals. North Van opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period, coming with the game only 46 seconds old, on a three way com- bination by Rod McKinnon from Gord Peters and Lindsay McDonald. Steve O’Kranetz got the Harbour City machine rolling at 3.05 of the second period, converting on a power play opportunity from Jim Bytelaar and Gord Rea. This was followed by Ken Nilsson’s goal midway through the _ period. O’Kranetz added his second of the period just two minutes later. The Rockets finally hit the scoreboard at the 15.55 mark of the second period with a power play goal - Gord Beedller finding the mark from the point with Steve Stuart drawing the assist. With 4.30 remaining, Paul Patterson scored on the power play from Stuart and Mark Oliver, and although continuing good pressure until the end of the game, the Rockets were un- successful in getting any more past Kling. Over the three periods North Van's Kling clung to 33 Rocket blasts while his West Van counterpart, Glen Luscombe, made 32 stops. In other Metro action, West Van's newest team, now officially named the Continentals, fell to the Port Coquitlam Blues 7-4 in a well-played game at West Van, Saturday. And par- ticulary noteworthy was the fact the West Van team went penalty free throughout the game while PoCo received only two minors. The Continentals trailed in the game 2-1 in the first period, 6-3 at the end of two, and then traded goals in the third for the 7-4 final. West Van scorers were Scott Mentiply with two, and Steve Drummond and Mark James with singles. West Van was outshot 40-30 with Mark Lafond in goal for the Continentals.
