A8 - Wednesday, December 10, 1980 - North Shore News TIDYING UP OF ONGOING ISSUES NV District council plans its calendar North Vancouver District council already has much of its work cut out for 1981 simply by continuing projects already initiated. On the agenda books to be dealt with during the for- thcoming council year ts the drawing up of a District community plan, trying to settle the issue of a further Seymour river crossing, in- volvement in light rapid transit and the controversial proposals for a new fire training centre and the ex- pansion of the Lynnmour firehall. And throughout the new term, it will be the same aldermen deahng with these ongoing issues that have decided council policies this past council year, since there are no new aldermen sitting on council. At) Monday's inaugural council meeting, mayor Don Bell noted that this was the second time in [5 years that no new faces appeared among members of council on inaugural night. “Tm sure we can expect a real contribution from each of you in our deliberations in 1981. a council nch with ex- perience from having work- ed together for the past year,” he told the newly reinstated council. Bell along with aldermen Jim Ball and Peter Powell, both commencing their seventh year on council and Alderman Mary Segal. beginning her third year, was sworn into office by Justce Kenneth S. Fawcus, while two members of the North Van RCMP added color to the occasion. The invocation was delivered by Father Albert Corndan of St. Stephens Cathohc Church. PHONE-IN Bell also said he has ar- ranged with local communi- ty television station, Channel 10, to provide one Tuesday night a month starting m January for a District council phone-in. “This will afford residents an opportunity to speak direcdy with members of council on matters that af- fect them.” Bell said. Bell cited the “need for counci to pursue its recent direction to staff to prepare the basis for discussions which will lead to the crea- tion of an official community plan for the Distnct.” He noted the “need for ef- fective community input into that plan.” Other priorities include reaching an agreement with the Squamish Indian Band which would allow design and construction to begin on a new access to the Seymour area. “This new road access will allow the beginning of new housing which is badly need- ed in our community.” he said. He said he also hoped a start could be made on the Low Level Road and bridge across McKay Creek at First Mr. John Fenney Street. The mayor referred to a modern direct-dial telephone bus information system which he saw demonstrated in Toronto last month and which he thinks would benefit North Shore transit users and en- courage new transit nders. “IT expect to be in a posi- tion to provide council with more details on how system would work in our community. and the costs, in the near future,” he said. REVIEW He also said it is ume for a review of the goals, objec- lives and joint bylaws of the North Van Recreation Com- mission which is now 10 years old. And he said counci! must give consideration to the cost-shamng aspects of the new Automatic Light Rapid Transit system announced by the provincial govern- ment over the weekend. Finally, he said. the Distnct plans to add two more playing fields next year.
