B2 -Sunday News, August 10, 1980 The news from the PNE that amateur sport is not going to be able to use the rapidly tiring Empire Stadium should not come as any shock to any supporter of the amateurs. The policy is typical of the esteem to which we of the western world hold our amateur athletes and those who follow cultural pursuits. While it is perfectly un- ’ derstandable that the old turf is wearing out and will havé to be carefully con- served to last for another two or three years, it is a sad commentary that the pros in their minority position as far as numbers but majority as far as dollars, will be saved. Let’s understand one thing now. Economically there is really no other way. No one wants to see the Lions or Whitecaps go down the pipe because the carpet is bare. Both teams have.a place in the social mosaic of the west coast. However, the fact still remains that amateur sport and other cultural pursuits always gets to hang on to the dirty end of the stick. It’s our whole § social structure at fault and not the PNE or the Lions or the Whitecaps. The problems of the old stadium is but the visible portion of an im- mense iceberg bobbing about the lower mainland. _ Playing fields are at a premium in many areas and sport is soon going to be in danger of grinding to a halt New ‘80’ Mercury Outboards 1 LOE MEER 499. 45HPM 575. 75HPM 7980. 75HP Mt 780. 8B8HPM 875. We can knock the eastern bloc countries as often as we wish but we must also acknowledge that they have devised policies and methods which allow, ‘and encourage, mass par- ticipation in the world of sport and culture. And anyone who says, “Yes, but they’re forced into it,” would also have to say that in the Vancouver area we are “forcing” our kids out of participation sport because of our lack of facilities.
