Ellsworth ‘Dickson In the last couple of weeks I have heard all sorts of ideas of what the western provinces should do in the future. Some are suggesting that if Quebec separates, so should the west. Others say we should join the U.S. And of course, many people still feel we should do everything to keep Canada together. This issue the Inquiring Reporter asks: ‘‘What would you like - fo see for the future of the West?” Ralph Kennedy North Vancouver If Quebec separates, the western provinces should bécome an independent country, but I would prefer it if all of Canada would stick together. On occasion, | feel the west has had the bad end of the deal from Ottawa. Mrs. Zora North Vancouver I'm in favour of keeping Canada together. I'm not in favour of sovereignty association for Quebec. I feel like Quebec is holding a gun to our heads. I think Ottawa should listen to the in- dividual needs of the provinces more. David Byerly North Vancouver Canada should - stay together, but if Quebec wants to separate, they should be able to. I would like the west to stay a part of Canada. It would be crazy to join the U.S. Paul Janzen North Vancouver I would definitely hke to see the west remain in confederation. I would not like to see the west in a situation like Quebec. J. Wilhelm North Vancouver I would hke to see the four western provinces on ther own, We would then have control of | our resources and not be controlled by Ottawa ~~ FROM PAGE A1 | meaningful relationship with the mill rates in neighboring municipalities by keeping the City’s mill rate down using “‘semi-panic measures.” The municipal operating budget of $12,687,642 for 1980 is up five per cent over last year’s figure of $12,655,482. The total municipal budget includes $4,216,000 for capital works projects, up dramatically from $846,412 in 1979. Mayor Jack Loucks said that North Vancouver City has fallen behind in dealing with a number of projects. “We're trying to catch up with some of the projects that should have been done in previous years,” he said. “I would have hoped we could have decreased the mill rate more but under the circumstances I think this council and staff have done a satisfactory job of bringing forward this budget,” Loucks commented in discussion on the budget. But Alderman Stella Jo Dean was not so pleased with the result. V City budget up by Dean said she was “strongly opposed” to the way the budget had been handled, referring specifically to the last minute meeting earlier that day. She concluded by say that she would vote for the budget but with “great reluctance.” Other council members disagreed with Dean. “We have nothing to be ashamed of,” Mayor Loucks said. “This is not the kind of budget any council feels it should apologize for, Alderman Gary Payne said. He said it was not ap- propriate to compare the City’s mill rate with that of North Vancouver District. Payne said that the City had been able to increase taxes by less than an in- flationary rate without cutting services. Alderman Gordon Cross vw?
