After another half-hour of

laboured chipping, we finaily
had the mast free of the ice.
Struggling to the car, we
loaded our cargo.

Tt was an almost surreal
scene: a tiny little car skewered
by a 25-foot sailboat mast.

We called it the “Car-
Kabob.”

On the journey home, we
tackled another problem: a
steep rise on one of the back-
roads.

As we ascended die hill, the
mast began to slide out the
back of the car. I sat in the
backseat, fantically trying to
halt the mast’s escape.

By the time we had crested
the hill, three-quarters of the
mast was hanging out the back,
bouncing off the asphalt.

Stil, Jake refused to pull
over. He was doggedly deter-
mined to make it home before
the cops spotted him.

I'm fairly certain the police
have no code assigned for sail-
boat mast-skewered European
vehicles.

And not ten seconds after
we pulled into his driveway —
the mast stilt tapping out a
steady staccato on the pave-
ment behind us — we spotted
a Saint John Police cruiser pass
by.

You couldn’t have cut it
closer. -

. “Just imagine the call the
cop would have to make on the
radio if they caught us,” chuck-
led Jake.

I stopped by Jake’s house
one day later that summer to

Jake figures he made off like
a bandit.
