N. Van City wants to COUNCIL WILL meet council face to face for the first time in four years as North Vancouver City and the Squamish Indian band try to resolve all the differences between them at one go. City council voted Monday to meet with the Squamish band council in the very near future to try to come to an agreement on such issues as improving Third Street between Forbes and Bewicke, building the Lower Levels Road link across the band’s Reserve No. 4, and providing new water connections for the reserve. Band Chief Phillip Joe. who attended the City council meeting, said he was pleased the two councils would finally get together. Joe said he was frustrated with delays in dealing with City staff on the matter of the water supply. City Engineer Alan Phillips and Mayor Jack Loucks said they were equally frustrated by the lack of communication from the band. your home even more! - ROCKING, - WINDOWS > PATIO) COVERS - AWNINGS we (Joe youl fost EATON'S EATONS HOME IMPROVEMENT SERVICES TY | ig sINE Qo: Install an energy efficient Gas Furnace today > Eaton's now offers a complete tine of high quality gas furnaces for your home heating needs - Comsder a humidifier to soften and morsten the alr in Cath today foe at free ie brome es tenate Call Day or Night 251-8335 EATON'S e€ guarantee i ay MG tat af © lat By TERRY LAVENDER Phillips said he first suggested last July providing improved water services to the reserve in exchange for allowing the City to improve Third Street. But some counc?l members felt that attitude was too confrontational. Alderman Ralph Hall even suggested that the City had to shoulder a great deal of the blame for the lack of success in past negotiations. The City has treated the Squamish Indians very poorly over the years, he said. “They've given us a lot and weve taken more.” He said council has to get rid of the mistrust that seems to exist between it and the Squamish band. One of the most important issues for the City 1s the Lower Levels Road, which now runs from the eastern end of the City to Park Royal Shopping Centre -- except for the Squamish Reserve No. 1.
