6 — Friday, October 16, 1998 - North Shore News E sixth annual Together Against Violence month will unfold in November. The North Shore should be proud of this home-grown proactive initia- tive. The seed for what has become a rich offering of information on vio- lence prevention and conflict resolu- tion began humbly enough in 1992 when a North Shore United Way chil- dren and youth committee attempted to come to grips with the complex issue of youth violence. The committee identified a need for a comprehensive approach to the issue and a network of community groups blossomed from that. The Together Against Violence Network now meets throughout the year. The initiative has inspired similar north shore news VIEWPOINT Worthy etfort province of Newfoundland has pat- terned a month-long anti-violence pro- gram in February after the North Shore experience too. Back in B.C. the Justice Institute has developed the manual, Together Against Violence, A Practical Plan For Community Action, for distribution to organizations throughout the province. This year’s North Shore program has broad support. This newspaper, North Shore Heaith Region, the three municipalities, VanCity Savings, Royal Bank Financial Group, The West Vancouver Foundation, Rogers Community TV, Highlands United Church, Capilano Community Services and the North Vancouver Royal Canadian Legion branch are backing the cause. The ~~~ Delving into a WV D Black decree helped raise Nisga’a issue Dear Editor: t wholeheartedly agree with your editorial on the topic of David Black in the Sept. 28 North Shore News. While emasculated pundits and sundry other people decry the NDP government's use of tax money to spread inaccurate information, our fearless leader Glen Clark con- tinues, with impunity, to spend millions of tax bucks on false advertising about the Nisga’s agreement. Iam glad that there was a man who had the means and gumption to couateract Glen Clark's propaganda and dully- ing tactics while at the same time allowing opposite opinions to be expressed. The fact that Messrs. Whiteley’s and MeGann’s lerters were printed in the Oct. 5 edition of your paper is proof that the policy did not stifle discussion, although their letters did not shed one iota of smoke or light on the Nisga‘a agree- ment. Glen Clark tells us chat the Nisga‘a will have a municipal government. The tegal relationship between municipal and provincial governments was illustrated recently in Ontario where the provincial legistature unilaterally forced, over the vociferous objections of local politicians, the amalgamation of ai! the municipalities in the metro Toronto area. The Nisga‘a agreement will not allow such unilateral action by our provincial government and consequently Nisga’a will form an additional level of government not pro- vided for in our Constitution. . Ratification of this agreement requires an amendment to the Constitution, which, in the case of British Columbia, must be preceded by the approval of the people in a reter- endum. YOU don’t start a column with a “soft” item. Burt this one appeals to me because it has a couch of mystery. A few Fridays ago, at St. Francis-in-the-Wood Church in Greater Tiddlycove, 2 concert was held called The Three Divas. The Vancenver Sun — which sponsored the concert — ran several ads tor it beforchand. But, strangely F thought, the names of The Three Divas didn’t appear in the ads. Nor was there a review of the concert in any newspaper. Um told the concert was just terrific. The Three Divas sang beautifully, They sang long, too — giving the audience great value for their money, And they also had a fine sense of humour: They did a funny send-up of The Three Tenors (who, as the saying goes, need no introduction). And speaking of value for money: Tickets were only 10 bucks! At the concert, which was sold out or close to it, there was indced a little pro- gram that named The Three Divas. But it provided no information about them. My cultural spy, CODE-R, who attend- ed, unfortunately has mislaid her program. So she couldn't report report their names to me. It passeth all understanding. An advertised : concert-for The Three Divas that didn’: name the divas, and wasn’t reviewed, So there’s the mystery: Who are these talented singers, The Three Divas? Someone, please, identify them to me. Hmmm. A hypothesis occurs. You don’t suppose that — to play a huge hoax on the musical world and its critics — The Three Tenors secretly flew to Vancouver, dressed in drag, torqued-un their voices a couple of octaves, and then topped off the ruse by doing a parody of themselves?
