Friend of theatre | BY JAN NOBLE News Reporter FLORENCE GOODWIN, -amuch loved member of North Shore theatre groups, passed away Feb. * 22 at age 90. Her memory lives on with the Florence Goodwin Memorial Theatre Award. The annual award honors her life- long contribution to communi- ty theatre on the North Shore, said her son John. That contribution began as far back as 1946, when Florence and her husband Howard Goodwin founded the West Vancouver Little Theatre Guild, which is now Theatre West Van. At the time, Florence also became one of the theatre sec- tion heads of the Community Arts Council of Vancouver. John, who lives in West Vancouver, said the multi-tal- ented Goodwin busied herself’ in other theatre pursuits such: as production, program adver- tising, and acting as assistant to the director and make-up when she was not playing a part in one of Little Theatre's plays. In 1965, a minor pari in the Littlest Hobo became her first film role. As a professional make-up artist, she eamed $600 a week working on the 1979 film Up River. She continued to act in plays and movies through the 1970s. During the 1980s, Goodwin focused her love for theatre on North Vancouver Community Players. “She found them to be full of life and provided her won- derful scope in her senior years,” said her sen John. Goodwin’ performed her last role in the children's play, Scroagie, the Musical in 1993. She was 87. In 1992, Goodwin received the Don Marsh Award for her work promoting a spirit of har- mony among theatre groups on the North Shore. “We all enjoyed having her around,” said North Vancouver Community Players past presi- dent and current publicist Anne Marsh. “She was somewhat quite special.” \ more reasons to stay y with someone you know Continental Breakfast In-rcom Coffee vi Parking y Minutes to downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park, v1 Unlimited local cals Movie Channel Grouse Mt., Suspension Sridge & Lonsdale Quay ZReservations 1-800-663-4055 987.4461} Toll Free Canada / USA 1800 Capilano Road, North Vancouver -Marsh said . the theatre played: a large. role in Goodwin's life in later years.
