The ways of the universe are indeed
interesting.

The Savary. pulied up stakes and moved
across Marine Drive, added cappuccino
machines and began to Teplicate the previ-
ous Savary/Bean experience.

Not to be outdone, however, the Bean
opened Bean Baking in the old Savary
locale and began to replicate the old
Bean/Savary experience.

Now the two former partners sit on oppo-
site sides of Marine Drive, eyeing each other
warily. combatants in the competitive coffee
bar trade. Two slices of the same pie.

The Boedas have long since departed the
Bean, but the Savary remains a family-run
West Vancouver success story presided over
by Hall, her son and two daughters.

Their new Savary features an eacellent

selection of baked goods ranging from cin-
namon buns and breads through to fresh pies
and tarts.

Savory items include soups (The Spicy
Mexican was sampled recently. It was excel-
lent — a robust broth filled with mush-
rooms, pasta, vegetables and spiked with
chilies and fresh cilantro), pizza, omelets,
and a daily selection of hearty sandwiches
ouilt with your choice of homemade bread.

The Savary is also licensed to sell beer
and wine.

Service is strictly over the counter. The
day Table Hopping visited, its delivery was
somewhat confused.

The Savary does not accept credit cards,
an oversight in this age of dwindling paper
money, but it has developed the funky feel
of West Vancouver's short-lived Remarkable
Dog to make up for any commercial short-
comings.

A sweet finish for a pie company that has
always been more than-savory, , .
