But that doesn’t mean the problem has disap- . peared. By Karen Speirs “Contributing Writer “In my work I can see that the " generation gap: is being bridged,” says Adilman. “Parents and teenagers have more skills than -they’ve ever had before, so they're communicating better and resolving problems. Often, the result is conflict. “The teenage years are definitely the most challenging time for par- ents,” says Adilman. “Mothers find it a very scary time, because they can see the dangers their daughters might face in terms of relationships, violence, body image and ‘self- esteem.” Women Together: Mothers & Daughters 1995 will focus on acknowledging these issues and pro- viding mothers and daughters with practical skills so they can open up lines of communication, understand what the other is facing and weather the storms that lie ahead. Adilman says these skills will be relevant to the whole North Shore population of mothers and daugh- ters, regardless of cultural back- ground or economic status. And she encourages teenage girls who don’t have mothers to attend with an adult female who is an important part of their life — perhaps an aunt or farn- ily friend. “After attending this conference, we want mothers and daughters to feel more connected, so they can work on strengthening their very important relationship,” she says.
