ith peacefu Violence prevention awards - RIDGEWAY. ELEMENTARY school staff received a Violence Prevention Award on _ Wednesday honoring five years of work to keep the school free of violence. Ridgeway elementary staff teach students assertiveness training to help resolve conflicts. Students are encouraged to express their feelings when disagreement with other stu- dents arises, “That slows down the situation, It makes the person, who is aggres- sive think and take some time to telate to this person in a new way, not as a bedy in the way, but as a real person,” said aumann, He said apologies usually come too iate in a violent conflict and stu- dents are advised to “squeeze in an apology early” to a avoid a physical confrontation. Baumann said the conflict train- ing has paid.off with incidents of school yard violence decreasing in the past five years. _. Ridgeway elementary: school was the group winner in the annual North = Vancouver Violence Prevention Awards sponsored by “North Vancouver city end district and the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce. The individual category winner _ was Franca Bertoncin of North = Shore Health. She is the driving «force behind the Together Against ’ Violence campaign. Bertoncin has worked on ‘other violence- -preven- ‘ don programs. . Individuals who received certifi- cates. of recognition were: North Vancouver RCMP Insp.
