received a $10,000 fine.

mately 166,000 liters (36,500 gal-
lons) of raw sewage was dumped
into the Britannia Beach landfill.

Some of the sewage made its
way into Britannia Creek..

The creek runs at the base of the
landfill, said a provincial environ-
ment ministry press release.

Dave Elliot said the sewage came
from. the 300 to 400 people at
Britannia Beach.

The sewage was trucked to the
landfill and dumped, contravening
Copper Beach's permit.

Mark Rowan said so much sewage
was duped in the landfill that one
side of it caved in.

Human waste and sanitary nap-
kins spilled inio the creek.

Rowan said Britannia Beach
residents filmed the dumping and
turned the tapes in to conservation
officers. ;

The case was doggedly pursued
by conservation, officer Shawn
Brinsky, Rowan added.

The fine marks the first time the
company has been brought to court
on such charges.

However, it is not the first time
the company has dumped sewage
into the landfill, said Elliot.
