Kevin Gillies INQUIRING REPORTER FOR THE past week the television and print media have been barraging the local citizenry with the news that we may have a major casino built along the south shore of the Vancouver waterfront. Mirage Resorts Inc. and VLC Properties Lid. have joined forces to propose the construc- tion of Seaport Centre Vancouver. The $750 million venture would house the Las Vegas-style casino as its centrepiece along with a 1,000-room hetel. The idea has excited many peopie in the hopes that it will boost tourism, create jobs and clean up the waterfront. Others are concerned about displacing the poor, taking gamblers away from non-profit ventures and the probability of increased crime that usually accompanies large casino ventures such as this.
