Learning centres teach basics

ON WEDNESDAY afternoons
and Thursday evenings at the
Kumon learning centre in Lynn
Valley, you can observe children
coming and going.

_ Each one of them picks up a set
of math worksheets and sits down
at the desk to work at numbers.
Depending on the level of dif-
ficuliy, the kids run through 100
to 200 problems in _tess than 20
minutes. ;

More and. more parents in
Canada are, paying attention to
their ‘children’s learning progress
and problems. .

Many children are enrolled in
supplementary education. pro-
grams; some even have private
tutars.

Institutions such as Brainchild,
Kumon and. Sylvan offer such
supplementary programs.

American schools is to adopt new
child-centred programs such as
the controversial Year 20€0 pro-
gram in B.C.

Unlike more traditional ap-
proaches, such programs are sup-
posed to teach children to think
and learn independently or coop-
eratively. ;

Most of the supplementary
education programs emphasize
practice. They teach math using
standardized worksheets that stu-
dents tackle in timed drills, and
generally require 10 to 30 minutes
to complete.

Ling Loon, who operates the
Lynn Valley’s Kumon centre out
of the Hillside Baptist Church,
870 Lynn Valley Rd., reports that
students quickly acquire the habit
of allocating time to concentrate
on their studies. Though | they
often find the worksheets difficult
to complete, through such expe-
riences students acquire persever-

Invariably, a student who
wishes to enroll in any of these
supplementary programs takes a
diagnostic test to determine where
he or she should begin.

“We go back and pinpoint the
causes of a student's problems and
that is the big difference between
us and traditional tutoring, which
tends to focus on preparing the
student for tomorrow’s test in
school,”’ says Loon.

Loon observes that. many stu-
dents who finish high school do
not attain the proficiency in basic
math to handle math at higher
levels.

The debate over whether or not
the school system provides the re-
quired education will continue.

However, the number of stu- -

programs is expected to increase.
