him. And just in the last few days
we got Buffy Sainte-Marie.”
Music Now: Have you got the
main stage agenda firmed up?
Cristall: ‘‘I’rn still in the middle of
deing that. It’s in this drawer right
here.”

Music Now: What considera-
tions do you put into that

aspect of the festival pro-
gramming?

Cristal: ‘Well it’s whatever |
want people to hear, what | really
like.” .

Music Now: So it’s still a Gary
Cristali show?

Cristall: “Yah, absolutely. I’m the
artistic director. My job is to do
that. They wouldn’t need me if it
could be done by a committee. !
think that this year what | want to
put out on stage are the things that
people haven’t heard before. 1

about this festival is that you can

‘hear all kinds of artists who are

performing for the first time in
Vancouver.

Music Now: I’ve always

Cristall: “We've thought of rain
insurance years ago. It was expen-
sive. We're going to look at that
now because it’s a Dit more rea-
sonable than it was.

“Ultimately, unless we put this
thing into inside venues, which
would destroy the feel of it, there
is no way. When we get hit by the
weather, we get hit by the
weather.”

Music Now: How about sub-
sidizing the festival with money
you make from the record
distribution wing? -

Cristall: “The problem with this
organization is that it is stupid. The
decisions we make with the re-
cords are the same decisions we
make with the concerts and the
festival. Our philosophy is one of
idiocy from a commercial point of
view. We’re interested in giving
people alternative music. That's
what we want to do. We're not in-
terested in sitting down and asking
what we can do to make the most
money.”

Music Now: But wouldn’t it be

nice to to have a little fiscal

buffer going into the festival
weekend?
Cristall: “’m not sure. It would .
be nice but the fact is that at this -
point we're not prepared to pay
the price. [t would mean doing . .
something on a commercial basis ”,
rather than trying to convince =~

exists on its merits alone.”

Music Now: Are there any ma-
jor changes on site this year?
Cristall: “There are less artists this
year so that people are getting a
little more time to play. | thin
that’s good. There are a lot more -
1%-hour workshops.
