THE FUTURE is looking bright
‘for Vancouver band, State of
Mind.

The .five-mémber band has been
named best group of the year on
an independent label by the Ca-
nadian Academy of Recording
Arts and Sciences. It has also won
best independent song and video
for the single, Tightrope.

Lead vocalist Vic Wayne con-
siders the honors a ‘‘nice,‘ steady,
progression” in the two and-a-
half-year-old band’s journey.
*“We’re really lucky,’’ says
Wayne, ‘‘every few months some-
thing comes along to boost our
stature.’

State of Mind will be perform-

‘ing in concert tonight and tomor-

tow at Sandy Cove in West Van-
couver,

Wayne says the group’s latest
recording on the new independent
label, London Smith, has been
well received and he's hoping it
will be picked up by a larger re-
cord company.

Their style is wide-ranging, but
Wayne says it’s difficult to pin-
point State of Mind’s sound.
“Think of 54-40, the Northern
Pikes. We’re not hard-rock, not
folk-rock. Let’s say it’s lyrically-
aware, socially relevent music.’’

Cry Out Loud, for example,
deals with Wayne’s personal expe-
rience with a close friend who was
fired from his job when it was
discovered he was infected with
the AIDS virus.

Moodyville opens its theatre
season with Ayckbourn piece
