Hickox photos hard to piece together From: page 43 cosmic stillness, the impending dissolution of things, and resoun- ding existential emptiness that is common to both. Ms. Hickox tells us her works are ‘stories’ that ‘give glimp- ses into passing moments, periods of change, confusion, and growth in my life. © They explore ideas about loss and the passing of time.” This description refers to se- quences of black-and-white photos like The Island. The latter consists of separate shots of an island with a gull taking off from the water, a rope coiled in the grass, a stuffed doe on a dais lit from below, a fetus inside a trans- parent, balloon-like womb, and a biurred image. In spite of the artist's declared . interest in visually evoking the kind of narrative that is charac- teristic of short stories, these pic- tures are hard to piece together. While the individual images are skilfully rendered, perceptually striking and emotionally stiraulating, the overall conceptual Pattern seems to be comprised of Hickox’ cryptic personal symbol- ism. Photo-artists like Benoit and Hickox are plagued by another problem. In the efforts to protect their vulnerable work they feel com- pelled to put it behind glass. The trouble is, this significantly in- terferes with the esthetic appeal of the pieces. The reflection from the glass makes it impossible to view the images underneath. - Kitsitano Neighbourhood House: Coconut Theatre Saciety is sponsoring Widowers’ Houses, directed by Martin Milierchip and starring North Van- couver’s Cavan Cunningham, as part of the Pacific Shaw Festival.
