Centre for Disease Control study to see if the tick that transmits Lyme disease is on the North Shore. By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter The study, which ends in July, involves the collection of ticks that North Shore residents find ei- ther on themselves or on a pet, according to Bill Kimmett, direc- tor of environmental health at North Shore Health. So far borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes the disease, has been isolated on the Atlantic Coast from Massachusetts to Georgia, the upper Midwest in- cluding Wisconsin and Minnesota, California and Oregon, and in Ontario. The disease has not been of- ficially recognized in B.C. because an infected tick has yet to be isolated here. The North Shore tick study is being done in association with the University of B.C. and Simon Fraser University as well as the North Shore-based Vancouver B.C. Lyme Borreliosis Society. The society’s co-founder, Diane Kindree, said the study may pro- vide definitive evidence that the Bacteria- -carrying tick exists in B.C. “T think it’s (the study) what was needed and I'm glad to see the North Shore Union Board of Health involved in it,”’ she said. The society has been involved in an extensive tick collection effort since February and is waiting for a report from the disease control centre. Kimmett said tick needs to be done in B.C. “In the past few years Lyme disease has been an issue where there has been a lack of research locally. At one point it was felt the circumstances just weren't there in Canada for the transmis- sion of the disease,’’ said Kim- mett. The health department has re- quesied municipal parks depart- ments post signs at all major parks from Deep Cove to Horse- shoe Bay advising people to take precautions in the area and ex- plaining how to remove ticks if they are found. Ticks should be gently removed to avoid removing their heads. They should. if possible, be kept alive. Ticks should then be placed in a small, sealed container with a biade of grass and sent to North Shore Health, a family doctor, or veterinarian. The location of the tick and the date it was picked up should be recorded. If there is any problem with tick removal, Kimmett advises people to see a doctor. Although North Shore Health is collecting ticks from residents, Kimmett said he doesn’t want people to be alarmed nor does he want people to actively search for ticks. “We don’t know for a fact that these ticks will carry disease,’' he said. ‘We're not telling people to go out looking for ticks but only if they find them — this isn't meant to be a North Shore-wide hunt for ticks.” research North Shore celebrates Port Day THE VANCOUVER Port Corp. is inviting the public to visit: the annual Port Day celebrations at Waterfront Park on Sunday.
