MAILBOX Women’s Council handling of carol issue still perturbs Dear Editor: 1 wish to respond to Bea Leinback’s Feb. 14 letter on my Christmas carol story and Doug Collins’ col- umn. If anyone offended the reputation of the Vancouver Council of Women it was president Bea Leinback herself when she condoned the executive’s statement that ‘‘we will not sing the traditional Christmas carols because they may offend some people — we will sing only the jingles.”’ When I objected to this offensive statement presi- dent Leinback said that ‘‘this was a decision of the executive — meeting adjourned.’ I was stunned. These statements could not be clearer. There is no misunderstanding or mistake, nor was I late for the lunch or the meeting, as president Leinback claims. All her statements about ‘‘tapes’’ are ridiculous — they were played while the women were preparing the lunch before the meeting and have no bearing, what- soever, on what the executive said about Christmas carols. If a mistake was made, it would te far better if president Leinback had apologized to the Christians for offending them and for discriminating against their cultural carols. It appears that her ‘‘Golden Rule’’ failed the Christians on Dec. 4. Sunshine Girl Dear Editor: is it just my imagination or is the North Shore News undergoing some sort of metamorphosis? Your recent issues, which have included Ecolnfo environmental columns as well as feature articles on community and home ecology, seem to be consistent with the in- terests of the community you report to. I believe most of us appreciate a serious, community and family- oriented, informational and enlightened publication. Incredibly, there is another chapter to this unfortu- nate incident. On Feb. $5 I attended their meeting to hear the minutes of Dec. 4. I got another shock. All references to Christmas carols were omitted from the minutes. Only after I insisted were the minutes corrected and carried. Later I moved that ‘The traditional Christmas carols be sung during the Christmas season’’ which was carried. Thanks to Roberts’ Rules. Since 1894 the Vancouver Council of Women has deservedly earned the respect of everyone for their good work. Therefore, it hurts me deeply, as it does everyone, that this happened. I believed then, and still do, that this issue was too important to ignore and sweep under the carpet. 1 am sure that the founder, Lady Aberdeen, would have done the same as I did. I also believe that she would never have permitted such a statement. Not to believe this would do Lady Aberdeen an injustice. Having attended all the meetings on time I know that Doug Collins’ column was never discussed, nei- ther was my letter nor any other letters, which I thought rather odd. It appears that this may be another ‘executive decision.’ Eleanor L. Hadley Vancouver has got to go Judy Gandossi West Vancouver @ A. John Lakes w James L. Straith w William J.
