Garden needs tending despite weather

FLOWER BEDS, LAWN WEED ATTENTION

I’M WRITING this on Sunday. The sun just came out and
the weather is beginning to climb out of the sub-arctic

regions.

Trying to compile - a. list of
gardening tips for the month of

been through is a little like trying

Do not be afraid to seed or
over-seed the lawn. As long as you
continue to water, the warmer (7)
weather will be more help than
hindrance.

* Flower Beds — Do not be sur-
prised if some of your annual
flowers look rather sad. This
recently cold, wet weather is not
what was promised when life
began in the perfect climate of the
grower’s greenhouse!

‘We only just started putting ours
out a few days ago. More as a
result of some typical impatience
rather than any noticeable im-
provement in growing conditions.
If it isn’t safe enough for even the
impatiens and zinnias, let them eat
cake.

Continue weeding and watering!
As mentioned previously, attention
to these details now will save you
much more work later.

Water flowers and foliage by

soaking the ground with a hose
flood: Do not use an over-head
sprinkler. This not only allows the
flowers. to. bloom over a longer
period; it also promotes faster
growth.

Begin applying water soluble
fertilizers such as 20-20-20 or, even
better 15-30-15, once every two
weeks. These fertilizers are high in
phosphorus and, as such, will
promote maximum bloom produc-
tion.

* Vegetable Beds — Again with
the watering, weeding, and
feeding. Even though I lead the
horses.to water, I can’t make them
give their plants a drink.
