Consumers beware of faulty
plumbing replacement parts

THERE’S A lot more to plumbing
- fittings than meet the eye.

Many replacement parts and
repair kits, while they appear iden-
tical to original parts, are of poor
quality and are subject to
premature failure.

The hazard exists that people
could be scalded because pressure
balance valves have failed due to
poor quality of uncertified
replacement parts.

CSA-certified plumbing pro-
ducts are designed and manufac-
tured to meet stringent wear and
tear requirements. Non CSA-cer-
tified products could lead to
serious deterioration and
breakdown.

Some products and areas where
the consumer should pay particular
attention are:

© Faucets (spindles, valves, car-
tridges, handfes and spouts). These
parts are subject to wear and tear
and poorly manufactured products
will have a short lifespan.

© Flush vaive repair kits which
may not meet CSA standards.

® Toilet tank components are
made from a variety of materials.

Cheap substitutes can cause the
toilet to flush poorly and may in-
crease water consumption.

Diverter valves, tub and
shower units, spindles, handles,
spouts, shower arms and heads,
integral balancing and temperature
control devices are all subject to
wear and corrosion. Failure of
these devices could result in life-
threatening situations.

CSA’s plumbing standards cover
fittings, fixtures, piping for drains,
waste, and venting; piping for
fresh water; and installation prac-
tices. There are separate standards
for plumbing systems in mobile
homes and recreational vehicles.

Thirty-four of these standards
are referenced in the Canadian
Plumbing Code.

At present, there is no require-
ment for CSA certification of
plumbing replacement parts. When
replacing plumbing products, to
ensure performance and reliability,
look for the CSA mark on the
parts or packaging.

If there is no mark, the con-
sumer has to rely on the informa-
