6 - Sunday, June 14, 1987 - North Shore News News Viewpoint Tourism in W. Van s West Van ready for tourism? Unlike their neighbors across the Capilano, Tiddlycove citizens have never shown wild en- thusiasm for welcoming tourist hordes — whereas the North Van Chamber of Commerce has long been an energetic promoter of a local tourist industry. Now, West Van Chamber of Commerce plans to go the same route. With no industrial base to yenerate home-grown doilars, West Van merchants — including Park Royal stores — sorely need more business. A yearly tourist influx is one tempting answer, especially with so much to offer: unrivalled scenery, sandy beaches, excellent parks and recreation facilities of every kind. There’s a snag, however. The bulk of tourist revenue comes from overnighters. In sharp contrast to North Van, West Van has nowhere legal — except the 30- room Park Royal Hotel and Capilano trailer camp — for them to stay. Day visitors do bring SOME extra business. But it’s West Van’s free (or low-cost) natural and recreational delights — not store-gazing — that chiefly attract those limited to a short excursion. They spend their big vacation bucks closer to where they sleep. To benefit significantly from tourism West Van needs hotels and motels (built where?), and legal bed- and-breakfasts. Otherwise, the prospect is for beaches, parks, boat rentals, parking space and other amenities crowded with strangers who leave little money behind. With or without more accommodation, can potential tourist revenue justify the impact on West Van’s treasured lifestyle? The economics of the concept need in-depth research before leaping on to North Van’s very different bandwagon. Its board recently created a tourism committee under energetic director Judi Ainsworth, charged with hot- ting up its ongoing campaign to woo out-of-town bucks to the North Shore.
