By KIM PEMBERTON News Reporter Bob was speaking to about 100 guests at a recent public informa- tion luncheon, organized by North Shore members of Alcoholics Anonymous. This past weekend was aiso the annual North Shore Round-up of Alcoholics Anonymous, held at Vancouver's Hyatt Regency Hotel. Bob, a former police officer, was one of three guest speakers from California invited to par- ticipate in the three-day con- ference. Bob said he became involved with AA when no hospitals in the United States would accept a pa- tient suffering from chronic alcoholism. “T was thoroughly convinced | would die a drunk,’’ said Bob, “until I was sent to a place like this and shown there were people who cared.”” “We're sick people and we've got to have help.”’ Jack, also from California, said he came to AA 40 years ago at the insistence of a friend who had been helped by the international organization. “Thad been drunk every day for three years previcusly,’’ said Jack, who owned a bar in Hollywood at the time. Jack, a former agnostic, said for the first six years of his member- ship in AA he doubted the belief in a higher power. As part of AA’s program, members are asked to develop their spirituality.
