Heart Foundation. Dr. Vincent Sweeney, a neurol- ogist at the Vancouver General Hospital and U.B.C. Health Sciences Centre, uses a scanner to study the metabolism of brain ceiis and blood flow in small parts of the brain in patients with stroke. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Canada, equally im- portant is the amount of perma- nent damage or death of brain cells due to blockage of an artery to the brain. The scanner expands knowledge of various responses of brain cells to a blood supply shortage. Lack of knowledge in this area has been one of the great impediments to improve the outcome of strokes. Sweeney is also involved in the adaptation the brain vessels to en- sure adequate blood flow when a major artery is closed. The scanner helps measure the use of oxygen and glucose by brain cells, which is a sign of how poorly cells are functioning and how they respond to treatment and changes in blood flow, Better understanding of brain responses helps to assess what benefits may derive from different forms of treatment. It’s also possible to record which injured cells might be capable of recovery, information which will be impor- tant for rehabilitation. Epilepsy is a disorder of the nervous system, causing seizures that vary in frequency, intensity and duration from person to per- scan. The three most common types of seizures are Tonic-Clonic, Absence and Partiai. In Tonic-Clonic the person loses consciousness, with or without warning, usually falling to the ground. Anyone witnessing such an at- tack should keep calm and let the seizure take its course. Experts advise move hard or sharp objects away but don’t in- terfere with the person’s move- ments, Once the convulsions have stopped roll the person over to the side to help clear the airway. In Absence seizures there is only a momentary floss of conscious- ness, after which the person resumes normal activity. Absence seizures occur primarily in children and tend to cease with age.
