By TIMOTHY RENSHAW The West Vancouver based duo is, according to Gillian Hunt, one-half of Voiceworks, a totally new entertainment concept designed to sharpen the more sombre edges of classical music with humor and ex- tremely odd on-stage behaviour. Hunt, and. Voiceworks proximately six months, both are classically trained musi- cians, both have enjoyed distinguished careers as soloists,and both view their chosen professions through laughing eyes. Before joining honours from the Royal Con- servatory of Toronto and subsequently established a reputation as a popular vocal soloist and voice teacher in eastern Canada. Voiceworks will be unleashed on the world Friday night, 8 p.m., at West Vancouver United Church. Cambridge and the founder and director of the Van- couver Children’s Choir, which is based in West Vancouver. Voiceworks is a concept conceived in the fertile ground of its members’ classical backgrounds and their desire to present serious music in a more universally palatable form. “Classical music perform- ed in recital is a dead form,”” says Hunt, ‘“‘so to make it more accessible to more peo- ple, we are going a different way: presenting classical music in a cabaret style.’’ She says Voiceworks's repertoire covers everything from Elizabethan to Modern Jazz to works from contem- porary Canadian composers such as Michael J. Baker. And, of course, a goodly selection of Lang’s own demented compositions. “Concerto For Winds"’, explains Hunt, ‘‘is Rupert's The piece will be perform- ed, along with kazoo fulisades, comic antics, and serious music when Voiceworks performs tonight, 8 p.m., at West Van- couver United Church, 2062 Esquimalt. Hunt says the show is for children and adults alike, and despite the humor and assorted nonsense integral to Voiceworks, quality of musical entertainment is paramount. Apart from their concerts, Voicev.orks is now offering workshops, seminars, and private lessons. A children’s summer workshop is being planned for the last two weeks of July. Workshops will take place in Voiceworks’s West Van- couver United Church Studios.
