HEAVENLY GLORY dépicted in stained giass illumines the Reverend lan G Catherine’s Anglican Church, on Ridgewood Avenue, North Vancouver. Burnett made the window in her Surrey workshop, depicting the Biblical verse “the heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament sheweth His handiwork.” A service dedicating the window was to be held today (Eric Eggertson photo). Trees bug neighbors, ~ threaten sidewalk HISTORIC horse chestnut trees lining 17th Street in West Vancouver may be pulled down and replaced. But West Van council won't touch the trees until a public meeting has been held, probably sometime in July. The trees, which were planted by Boy Scouts in 1935, have historic as well as sentimental value to many residents of West Van, but to others they are nothing but a nuisance. According to a_ report from Parks Manager Heinz Berger. complaints about the trees range from too many leaves to the most common complaint of people tripping over the chestnuts. Buses and large trucks are hampered by overhanging branches, “severe pruning” by B.C. Hydro has damaged most and killed some of the trees, and the report warned that their strong root system will cventually break side- walks and plug sewer lines. But, if the trees are removed, the street won't be left bare. Berger suggested gradual replacement of the horse chestnut trees with smaller flowering trees such as a red horse chestnut or flowering cherry. eA Total cost of the replacement was estimated at $50,000 to $60,000 in 1981 dollars. But Alderman Dave Finlay suggested that since some of the residents of 17th street have been anxious to remove trees at their own cost, council should allow tree replacement that way. The replacement program could take about 10 to 15 years according to Deputy Municipal Manager Bob Collier. The Boy Scouts, who planted the horse chestnuts originally, have been asked to play a role in the replace- inent program.
