SUGGESTIONS | for improvements of playing fields in North Vancouver have met with lukewarm response from the North Vancouver City engineer. Alan Phillips says there's not enough money in the City budget to pay for some of the suggestions from the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, and others are unnecessary or would encourage vandalism. But Phillips did have some good news for North Vancouver soccer players: his department will consider constructing two all-weather soccer fields at Hamilton — if the money ts available. City council referred Phillips’ report to its Parks and Recreation Committee. To the suggestion that the City hire more caretakers, Phillips says “We consider we provide adequate caretgker staff now,” with full time caretaker and an additional one for the summer. Putting up weather- protected signboards = for schedules in City parks and fields “would merely con- tribute to the vandalism problem, as such facilities are a prime target” for destruction,” said Phillips in response to another City cool to parks proposals suggestion. The Rec Commission wants the City to include changing rooms-~ and washrooms wherever new fields are constructed, and Phillips replied that all municipalities try to provide the best possible facilities consistent with the available money. Specifically, the com- mission asks the City to provide changing facilities and washrooms for Nor- seman and Loutet Parks. But Phillips said facilities should be provided in the Rec Centre for Norseman Park, as it is immediately east of the centre. Expansion of the public toilet in Loutet Park to provide changing rooms is not a high priority, he said. The main problem is money, said Phillips. “All of these requests come back fundamentally to the availability of funds for recreational purposes. in general, and for playing field development and ancillary facilities.” But previncial cuts in recreation spending mean funds are limited for im- proving playing fields in North Vancouver City. The Recreation Com- mission, in reply to com- plaints from field users, has sent suggestions for im provements to North Vancouver District and School District 44 as well **‘We look great all year round with the Tanfastic.... indoor sun tan Get a head start on your summer tan, pre-tan NOW the safe Tan- fastic way.
