merchants. are hoping as
they hold their breath in this
quiet, slow-starting
Christmas shopping season.

Some of them, nervous at
the prospect of poor
business, have opted for
some of the earliest year-end
sales in years.

“It's the first year in years
that I can remember sales
before Christmas,” observed
Ettie Sigurdson, manager of
Cloud Nine Ifadies Apparel
in the Westlynn mail.
