PRICETAG SOARS Over half-a-million dollars will be spent on a system to control leachate from the new extension at the North Vancouver sanitary landfill. And that’s far more than the District of North Van- couver had originally budgeted. At Tuesday night’s council meeting the low tender bid by Globe Excavations Ltd., for $556,300, was accepted. According to a_ staff report, it is estimated that the total leachate control system for the northern ex- tension of the landfill will now total just over $800,000. Part of the increase in cost is due to the fact the project has been extended to pro- vide a complete control system for the full forty acre ultimate extension of the landfill. A planned cut-off wall which will extend north along ghe perimeter of the landfill parallel to Lynn Creek will now also be ex- tended between the old and new sections of the landfill. Fire trucks purchased West Vancouver has decided to purchase two new fire trucks, one for Hor- seshoe Bay fire station two and one for the Caulfield/Tiddlycove fire Station three. The total cost, including a trade-in allowance on two by West Vancouver existing fire engines, will be $251,167. West Vancouver council approved the purchase of the two triple combination diesel pumpers, which will be supplied by Hub Fire Engine company of Ab- bortsford in about a year. 45 day term with $5000 minimum deposit The deputy municipal engineer also nofed tender bids were all higher than originally anticipated, “reflecting the uncertainty felt hy the contractors in bid- ding an unusual type of work.” The Globe tender is an unique system which John Bremner, the District engineer, said consultants “felt confident is a good solution.” The Globe system will create an impermeable cut- ‘Leachate system approved in N. Van off wall by contructing a slurry wall consisting of a mixture of bentonite, clay and silt. The other tenders called {or a wall using a PVC mem- brane liner which Bremner said could tear when it was installed. The proposed system was submitted to the Waste Management Branch which required additional work to be done at a cost $125,000. This is included inthe $806,300 total.
