A8-Wednesday, June 11, 1980 - North Shore News. POLICE PONDER PROBLEM Weather doesn’t stop W. Van's beach boozers . Even the weather of last weekend didn’t deter the drinkers from taking their hooch onto the beaches, causing West Vancouver Police to wonder just how serious the public drinking problem has become. Police made 39 seizures in random spot checks at 15 locations over the weekend, netting 330 bottles of beer, 12 bottles of wine and 13 bottles of liquor. There were also two seizures of marijuana and complaints of seven parties, although police say that none of them = got par- ticularly out of hand. West Vancouver has been experiencing an increasing problem of public drinking on its beaches and in its parks. The problem has been escalating in spite of a concerted crackdown by the police which has included the regular setting up of roadblocks to confiscate alcohol. And whereas last weekend "saw graduate celebrations throughout West Van- couver, the police say there seems to be little, if any, connection between grad students and _ the - public drinking of the same period. “There were no noticeable problems with grads,” a spokesman commented. “They behave themselves fairly well as far as booze is conoerned.” In fact, he added: “We hive kagy, gnost impressed with ‘the West Van graduating classes for the past several years.” Yet public drinking is increasing. and over the weekend West Vancouver Pohce also suspended six drivers on charges of being impaired. The police spokesman expressed surprise at the number of seizures in view of the poor weather and commented: “If it had been a good weekend | hate to think what it would have been hke ” Time was on driver's side impaired case dismissed Charges against a North Vancouver man were dismissed Wednesday because the cxact time of the auto accident he was in. volved in was not deter mined during the tral Norman Bateman, 25, of 106-163) West Street, wos charged December 31, with having the care and control of a motor vehicle while im paired, and having care and control while having a blood alcohol level over O# Bateman pleaded guilty to both counts RCMP Constable Terrance Sorensen testified that found Bateman standing next to a carina ditch on Dollarton Highway at about 31 receiving phone call He said Bateman said he had been cut off by another vehicle and the car went off aged Sth nol he afiler anonymous pm. an the road and dropped tnto a ditch ata very stecp angie Sorensen said Bateman showed signs of impairment and was taken back to the police station breath tests.
