But, they are passing up the best season of the year to break-in a new automobile, according to the British Columbia Auto- mobile Association. Lower outside tem- peratures mean lower operating temperatures and less pressure on new engine and transmission parts. The colder it is, the better for building a long life of a new vehicle. But whenever you choose to buy a car, remember that it is a new piece of equip- ment which needs special attention. Owner's manuals, especially those of cars, usually don't stress the importance of a careful break-in period toward long auto life. The average break-in period for a new car is about 6,400 km with the first 3,000 km the most crucial. For the first 800 km the club advises to keep engine speed low — below 2,500 rpm on a tachometer, or about half the recommended Maximum engine speed. Check the owner’s manual for normal maximum speeds in the various gears and use no more than half that for both manual and automatic transmissions. Keep to a maximum road speed of 70 to 80 kph. That means staying off freeways in the beginning. Avoid short trips, trailer towing, and extended idling. Try to drive a minimum of 80 km at permit and the engine is completely warmed up. After 3,000 km, says the BCAA, begin operating the car according to your norma! routine. If you tow a trailer, -you can do. that safely, too. The club stresses a close eye on engine oil tevel: consumption is higher when a Car is new. Maintain the oil level within a half-quart of a wide range of operating conditions early in its life will improve economy and reliability later. Maintenance checks. are as important as_ special driving habits. Remember that lubricants play a par- tcularly large role now, oil changes are critical for a long life. Change ail lubricants and filters at 1.600 auto a time completely warmed up. so the car gets Begin each start on a cold engine with a two-minute idle to make certain that the oil has a chance to circulate well in the engine. Between 800 and 3,000 km on the odometer gradually increase the speeds in shifting. An occasional full- throttle burst is permissible when traffic and safety “full”. Oil is a coolant as well as a lubricant. All this may seem unduly fussy to people who only keep a new Car two to three years. And, admittedly, these are goals to aim for, not rigid rules. The agency said the controls will reduce the amount of diesel soot released into the air by 74 per cent by 1985 — a reduction of from 40,000 to 66,000 metric tons per year. The controls will add more than $150 to the cost of new cars and small trucks by the model year 1983, but will not affect fuel mileage, the agency said. EPA administrator Douglas Costle said diesel particles need to be con- trolled because they can cause lung and respiratory diseases. Although the agency is studying whether the fumes cause cancer, Coste said the new controls are not related to chat possibility “Like other particulate air 1 - APPROVED AUTO REPAIR SERVICES e Brakes e Wheel Balancing e Shocks pollution, diesel par- ticulants, when inhaled, increase a person's chances of developing lung in- fections, bronchitis, or other respiratory ailments,” Costle said. “But diesel particles are especially fine matter, capable of deeply penetrating people's lungs. Diesel engines, in- creasingly popular because they provide better mileage with cheaper fuel than gasoline- powered ones, were used in only 4 per cent of the new cars turned out last year. but the auto industry expects them to be mounted in 20 per cent of the car fleet later in this decade.
